The Wisconsin football staff is hoping to turn things around on offense after two explosive performances before the loss.
Offensive Coordinator Phil Longo has been at the forefront of the majority of gripes the Wisconsin football fans have with the team. When Longo was hired, the concept of an “air raid” offense was thrown around, involving high-caliber quarterback play and deep touchdowns. The result in Madison, however, has been far from that ideal image.
Although, there have been moments where the offense has come to life, in particular during this season. Longo began the season on thin ice with many fans after struggling to offense to a 7-6 record last season without starting quarterback Tanner Mordecai for a chunk of time.
This season, Longo has been dealt the same hand, losing starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke after just a handful of games. Backup quarterback Braedyn Locke has been thrusted into the starting role and his development has seen plenty of hills and valleys. Locke currently has an interception in every single start he has made this season, including his relief performance against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Between the struggles of Locke, the lack of consistency on offense, and the odd usage of many players, the Wisconsin football fans have been questioning how long Longo will remain.
Either Phil Longo sucks or Phil Longo is in a chokehold by Luke Fickell. This is an offense problem https://t.co/dFnV7tOpI4

Phil Longo was brought in to make the Badgers offense more “dynamic”. It could not possibly look less “dynamic”.

Please do everything you can to turn up the heat on this coaching staff. Phil Longo is GARBAGE and Fickell has done literally nothign to merit his salary. This program has become shameful.

Phil Longo, most overhyped hire of all time.

Wisconsin football is a shell of what it used to be. It’s hard to watch. Phil Longo needs to go. Luke Fickel has been unimpressive. The talent level at Wisconsin is noticeably inferior and has worsened over the years. Wisconsin football needs to upgrade the program. #embarrassing https://t.co/VA6PdiMq8L

Can Phil Longo Retain His Wisconsin Football Position Next Season?
With the way the Wisconsin football offense was previously trending, Longo arguably was doing enough to keep his job. However, if the losses continue to stack up due to the struggles the coordinator could face a potentially swift boot.
Currently the Wisconsin football team is 5-3 this season after seemingly crawling their way up the Big Ten Conference standings. The loss to Penn State in particular stings, as the offense again collapsed following the first-half of play like the team did against the USC Trojans. The pick-six that Locke threw in the second-half in particular was a massive morale shift, and the offense never seemed to recover from the play.
If the Wisconsin football team can get back to winning ways against the Iowa Hawkeyes, a tough defense, then Longo should be safe for the time being.
