The Packers’ season has not gone the way many thought it would. Sitting at 4-7 currently, the team would need to go on an epic run to make the playoffs. At this point, Packers fans should start to turn their attention toward how GM Brian Gutekunst is planning on improving the team through the draft. Here are the consensus expert picks in the most recent Packers mock draft.
Expert Picks In Packers Mock Draft
Gutekunst has focused on defense in the draft during his tenure. Many experts are thinking that this will finally be the year that he picks offensive talent in the first round. The most common positions are wide receiver and tight end. If the Packers go the wide receiver route, experts have them picking Tennessee Volunteers receiver, Jalin Hyatt. Hyatt has been getting a lot of national attention as the Volunteers have had a resurgent season. His best game of the season came against Alabama where he caught 6 passes for 207 yards and 5 touchdowns. In total, he has 15 touchdowns on the year. While he is not a big receiver, he can make catches in tight spaces.
Tight End Prospects
A lot of expert picks for the Packers mock draft are for a tight end. With the emergence of Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, many experts think the Packers are happy with developing those two receivers. The tight end position has more questions. Robert Tonyan may not get resigned and the depth chart behind him is not great. There are two elite tight ends in this draft that the Packers could target. Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer brings a great blend of catching and blocking. If Mayer is off the board, the Packers could take another Georgia Bulldog in Darnell Washington. The Packers have had good luck in drafting from Georgia so it would not surprise me if Gutekunst went with this pick.
This will finally be the year that the Packers draft for the offense. The defense has enough talent and while they are struggling, I think a change in defensive coordinator solves that problem rather than drafting more first-round talent. The 2022 class overall has been successful. If Gutekunst can follow it up with another quality draft, the Packers will have a bright future.
