Jordan Love has played his way into the conversation as one of the top-10 quarterbacks in the league this season, at a franchise quarterback level, despite not having two of the Packers‘ most effective pass-catchers on the field at the same time together for the vast majority of this season.
That could be about to change.
While tight end Tucker Kraft has developed into one of the most prolific pass catchers in the offense, hauling in 39 receptions for 521 yards and seven touchdowns so far this season, the Packers’ offense was designed to function with two tight ends, including Luke Musgrave potentially also being a focal point.
Unfortunately for Musgrave and the Packers, the 24-year-old has only played in 125 total snaps with Kraft also healthy and available, as ESPN research points out.
However, Musgrave is reportedly making progress towards making a return from a torn ligament in his ankle that has kept him sidelined since Week 4.
The chance to have his pass-catching tight end duo back and healthy wasn’t lost on Love as the Packers continue to prepare for Sunday night’s showdown against the Seahawks, in Seattle, with massive NFC Playoff implications at stake.
“It would be big-time,” Love told reporters this week. “I think the last time we had it was really during training camp, having both those guys out there. And it definitely changes the plays we call and some of the formations we have and personnel groupings.
“It’s been tough not having Luke out there, so to get him back healthy and back out on the field would be big time.”
Love is currently completing 62.8 percent of his passes for 2,724 yards with 21 touchdowns to 11 interceptions, with Kraft third among Packers’ receivers.
It might not be Sunday night that Kraft is back in action, after all, he was only able to participate in individual drills on Wednesday, he could be coming to a two-tight end set near Love soon.
“I think it’s as soon as practical,” Musgrave said when asked about a timeline to return. “I don’t know if there’s a timeline, but as soon as possible that they’ll let me go, I’ll go.”
