The Green Bay Packers host the NFL Draft for the first time ever this year. At the end of April, all eyes will be focused on the NFL’s smallest city to learn the direction their franchise will take. That being said, it’s becoming more and more possible that Green Bay won’t have a first round draft pick this year.
Packers: “It’s Doable” Widespread Belief Of Huge Trade Going Viral (Report)
Packers’ pass rush looks like the team’s biggest defensive weakness in the playoffs after failing to beat eventual NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles in the first round. The situation would change dramatically if Myles Garrett were acquired.
Will Brian Gutekunst be able to pull off a rare blockbuster trade for Green Bay? It’s possible, according to a Packers insider:
Matt Schneidman, the Packers beat reporter for The Athletic, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to respond to coworker Dianna Russini’s report that it would likely take a first-round pick and more for a team to pull off a Garrett trade.
“It’s doable, especially if Brian Gutekunst wants to back up his statement about expecting to compete for a Super Bowl in 2025,” Schneidman wrote.
“Pass rush was inconsistent, hence (defensive line) coach firing. I’m sure fans would understand the Packers not having a first-round pick in the draft they’re hosting.”
By acquiring Garrett, the Packers would assume the final two years of the five-year, $125 million extension the 29-year-old signed with Cleveland, putting them on the hook for $40 million in total salary cap expenditures.
When a 29-year-old has 102.5 career sacks, it’s worth the risk. There will be stiff competition, so Green Bay will have to convince both the Browns and Garrett that they are the right choice.
Regardless, Green Bay’s biggest need could be addressed in a massive way. The team signed Reggie White in the mid 1990s and would go on to win a Championship. Could Garrett be the next in line?
