DeAndre Hopkins made a major announcement on his social media Thursday regarding his future longevity in the league. The 31-year-old All-Pro wide receiver is considered the top free-agent wide receiver on the market at this point in July.
Several teams though to be playoff contenders in the preseason, including the New England Patriots, have shown interest in signing Hopkins this season. Former Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook would prefer to team up with Hopkins on a contender this season.
Hopkins is two seasons removed from an incredible 2020 season that saw him net over 1,400 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He didn’t break 1,000 yards in 2021 or 2022, but he played a total of 19 games through both of those seasons. Hopkins suffered an MCL injury in 2021 and was suspended for six games in 2022.

Hopkins still believes he has many seasons left to give the game of football. According to a social media post by Hopkins, the former 2013 Houston Texans first-round pick stop playing when he’s a sub-1,000-yard pass-catcher:
“I’ll retire from football when I’m not a 1k-yard receiver. With that said, I was on pace for 1,400 yards last year—one significant injury in 11 years. I might be playing till I’m 37 the way I feel.”

If healthy, that could be a while. Hopkins is a big-bodied wide receiver that is challenging for cornerbacks to defend. There’s a reason why the best teams in the NFL want him. He has the potential to take a borderline contender and make them into a championship winner.
But his price is risky. The more years Hopkins adds to the other side of 30, the more front offices will be concerned the knee injury he suffered two seasons ago won’t be an anomaly. Hopkins’ body could eventually render him a wide receiver incapable of being a 1,000-yard receiver.
That shouldn’t be an issue this season.
