Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier made major NFL news this offseason when he decided to “step away” from coaching for the 2023 season. It was unclear if Frazier would return to the Bills for the 2024 season, as the long-time NFL coach plans on putting the whistle on again in the future. A new report indicates there is closure to Frazier’s status with the Bills.
Frazier was the Bills coach from the 2017-22 seasons. He helped build the Bills into one of the best defenses in the NFL. Last season, the Bills gave up the fourth-least points per game (19.1). However, Frazier’s defense in the playoffs wasn’t great.
The Bills gave up 31 points to a Miami Dolphins team led by their third-string rookie quarterback. They surrendered 27 at home in the snow to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Some fans wanted a change at defensive coordinator after the playoffs. An odd sentiment after Frazier was a head coaching candidate the offseason before.
Early NFL news on Leslie Frazier left out some key details

A permanent change appears to be what they’ll get. Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network was on the Pat McAfee Show Monday and said the reasons for Frazier leaving were more complex than what the Bills led on when Frazier left. Rapoport said the Bills were planning to turn over the playcalling duties to head coach Sean McDermott and the team reached an agreement for Frazier and the Bills to separate.
The show hosts asked Rapoport if there was any possibility for Frazier to return next season like general manager Brandon Beane had left open this winter. Rapoport emphasized his “no” response and shook his head.

Are the Buffalo Bills panicking?

The offseason has been eventful for the Bills. The Bills made several changes to the coaching staff after Frazier stepped away. Several key members of the team left in free agency. Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds going to the Chicago Bears was a costly hurt. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs is reportedly having issues with the design of the offense this year.
The team could be in for a rocky season in 2023. They will face tough competition from all three teams in the AFC East this season. But it seems like many frustrations from the coaching staff and players are starting to boil over into stories in June. They’ll have to put last season’s playoffs in their rear-view mirror by training camp if they want to have a successful 2023.
