The Milwaukee Brewers have made their first move of MLB trade deadline week by acquiring first baseman Carlos Santana from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Santana, a 37 year old switch hitter, was traded at last year’s deadline as the Kansas City Royals dealt him to the Seattle Mariners.
After his two month stint with the Mariners, Santana agreed to a one year $6.25 MM deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. This season he is slashing .235/.321/.412 with 12 home runs and 53 runs batted in. He also has +6 DRS at first base, which leads the league.
In exchange for Carlos Santana the Brewers are parting ways with 2022 International signee Jhonny Severino. The 18 year old was ranked 21st by MLB Pipeline in that class and this year he was playing in the Arizona Complex League.
Where will former Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman and new Milwaukee Brewers member Carlos Santana fit in?
Entering the season Rowdy Tellez was the Brewers everyday first baseman. He had a great month of April but has struggled since and is currently on the injured list. Owen Miller has been playing a lot of first base as a result. With Carlos Santana being a switch hitter he could theoretically play near everyday the rest of the way either at first base or designated hitter.
Hopefully Carlos Santana is able to come through in some big moments for the Brewers. He hit a walk-off home run against them about one month ago in which his celebratory dance at home plate caught a lot of media attention. Now he will join the club house full of the players from the team that has not forgotten that moment.
