While never playing for the Milwaukee Brewers during his baseball career, Bob Uecker is still considered a Brewers hero by many fans. With half a century of play by play announcing for the team under his belt, it’s no wonder why CBS Sunday Morning deemed him “the most authentic Milwaukee touch of all” in their recent story about him. Being born in Milwaukee himself, and repeatedly turning down offers from other teams, Uecker has become a consistent fixture of Brewers culture over the years.
Milwaukee Brewers Hero Celebrated in CBS Spotlight
While Uecker did turn down an offer from the Yankees, he said yes to a multitude of television roles, performing standup on the Tonight Show, acting in a sitcom, appearing in commercials, and giving an iconic performance in the “Major League” movies. Due to his busy announcing and performing schedule, Uecker became well known outside of Milwaukee as well as within.
To honor and celebrate this home town Milwaukee hero, a statue of Bob Uecker now sits in the Brewers stadium. This full color fixture is situated in the back row of the stadium, right behind a large pole. Arm extended to the side, the statue is the perfect photo opportunity for Brewers fans to snap a picture with this iconic figure of Brewers history. Considering the seat itself was probably not too desirable before due to the low visibility, adding this tribute what a great way to make a bad seat into something special.
Despite his extensive announcing and performing career, Bob Uecker still considered himself a player at heart. Current Milwaukee Brewers player Brandon Woodruff shared with CBS Sunday Morning that Uecker still shares stories of his days playing as a catcher with the team, stating “he’s one of us. He’s part of the team.” Given Uecker’s long history with the Brewers, I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would disagree!
