There’s a risk the Milwaukee Bucks won’t be able to make big moves in the offseason and all the key players will be off the board. In this regard, the front office can make a sleeper signing by getting Wenyen Gabriel as a free agent in the coming months.
Gabriel has had a winding journey through the NBA, showcasing his versatility as a power forward. After going undrafted in 2018, he signed a two-way contract with the Sacramento Kings but did not see game action that season.
In 2020, Gabriel was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers, where he spent time with their G-League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd. There, he demonstrated his well-rounded game, averaging nearly 14 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game.
Following his stint with the Herd, Gabriel has continued to bounce around the league, earning two-way deals with the LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers and a Memphis Grizzlies team without Ja Morant in it. His ability to contribute on both ends of the floor has made him a valuable depth piece for these teams.
Most recently, Gabriel has taken his talents to the National Superior Basketball League in Puerto Rico, signing with the Vaqueros de Bayamon. This move showcases his adaptability and willingness to continue developing his game, as he pursues more opportunities at the professional level.
Former Wisconsin Herd Star Wenyen Gabriel Identified as Possible Free Agent Target for Milwaukee Bucks
The Bucks’ front office should reinforce the core of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard in the coming months to prevent an early playoff exit again. In an article for Behind The Buck Pass, Dalton Sell went into detail why the former Wisconsin Herd star makes sense for Milwaukee.
“With the Bucks likely to move on from Danilo Gallinari, the team will need a new body in the frontcourt. Gabriel could be an interesting fit, giving the team a 6-foot-9 big man who can play power forward or center when asked. That type of versatility could make him a strong addition to this bench, allowing the Bucks to get creative with their lineup combinations.
Not only does Gabriel have an impressive motor that could give this bench unit some life, but he also possesses quality athleticism, which this frontcourt rotation desperately needs. As he’s shown in the G-League, he’s a mobile big man who uses his athleticism and build to sky for rebounds and protect the rim. An injection of that would be of great use,” Sell wrote.
Throughout his career, Gabriel has averaged 4.4 points on 31 percent shooting from deep and 3.4 rebounds. If given the opportunity, the power forward can thrive in a reserve role under head coach Doc Rivers.
It remains to be seen whether Milwaukee can land Gabriel or not. Nevertheless, the upside he brings to the table may be worth it for Antetokounmpo and company.
