While other teams in the Eastern Conference, the Milwaukee Bucks just made some minor moves during the offseason. If they want to optimize their lineup for another run at a ring, the front office may have to consider trading Pat Connaughton to get some assets in return.
After six seasons, it may be time for the Bucks to consider parting ways with Connaughton. Though he has been a valuable asset during his time with the team, his recent performance raises questions about his future.
Connaughton, a nine-year veteran, was instrumental in the Bucks’ 2021 championship run, but his shooting has declined significantly. He has struggled to maintain a three-point shooting percentage above 35%, averaging just 5.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists last season over 22.1 minutes. His overall shooting was 43.5% from the floor and 34.5% from beyond the arc, which is below expectations for a player in his role.
Moreover, Connaughton’s rebounding and defensive contributions have diminished. Once known for his rebounding ability, he now finds himself less effective on the defensive end, often struggling to make an impact during games. With a three-year, $28.3 million contract, including a $9.4 million salary this season, his financial commitment adds to the urgency of the situation.
Milwaukee Bucks’ Pat Connaughton Named as Potential Trade Candidate in 2024-25 Season
It can’t be denied that Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard‘s championship window is already closing. If the Bucks want to make the most out of their stars’ prime, they may consider trading Connaughton, as explained by Sports Illustrated’s Cody Smith.
“Trent is expected to fill the void as the team’s starting shooting guard and younger players such as AJ Green and Andrew Jackson Jr. each offer more upside at this point in Connaughton’s career. On top of that, all three of them make less than Connaughton’s scheduled $9.4 million salary for this upcoming season. When younger and much cheaper players can potentially offer more upside, it could raise the question about a potential trade.
Due to his decently-sized salary, the Bucks could potentially land a solid rotational piece in exchange for Connaughton. However, it would definitely come at a cost being Milwaukee would likely have to attach some sort of draft capital to finalize a deal. If a quality player hits the trade market, then it could be worth moving Connaughton for depth purposes,” Smith wrote.
The Bucks could benefit from focusing on younger talents like Andre Jackson Jr. and A.J. Green. Jackson, a 6-foot-6 guard, has shown potential and could thrive with increased playing time. Meanwhile, Green has emerged as a reliable shooting option, hitting 41.2% of his three-pointers over his two seasons.
Given Connaughton’s recent struggles, the Bucks should explore trade options or consider allocating his minutes to their younger players to rejuvenate the roster. If they succeed, they can recuperate some assets or add a role player that can make more of an impact than the veteran wing ever did.
