The Milwaukee Bucks have struggled to sustain deep playoff runs despite winning their first NBA title in decades in 2021. While it’s undeniable that Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the best players the NBA has ever seen, the past couple of seasons have shown that he cannot win everything on his own.
While other factors prevented the Bucks from making repeat trips to the Finals, it all boils down to the roster not working the way it was intended to work. While some of the key members of the roster want to prove everyone wrong in the coming season, it can’t be helped that some of the roster moves the Bucks did disappointed some fans.
One particular decision that broke the hearts of fans is Grayson Allen’s short tenure. He was a serviceable guard for the team who provided shooting and defense, but one analyst tried to look into why he failed to make a greater impact on the Bucks’ championship hopes.
Analyst thinks Grayson Allen’s Milwaukee Bucks tenure failed due to inability to step up in big moments
Behind the Bucks Pass’ Dalton Sell wrote about trades Milwaukee pulled off after winning their 2021 championship and why they failed.
He talked about Allen and his time in the team. While he didn’t completely thrash the Duke product, he pointed out that his inability to step up during big games saw him as a piece the team could do without:
Allen had his moments, even putting together the best regular season of his career in 2021-22. Yet, the moment that will define his tenure in a Bucks uniform is the playoff series against Boston in 2022. After catching fire the series prior, Allen’s production fell off a cliff against the Celtics, averaging five points while shooting 20.8 percent from three and constantly being targeted on defense.
The guard put together a fine year the following season, shooting the long ball well while upping his production as a facilitator. His play wasn’t as bad in the 2023 NBA Playoffs as it was in that series vs. the Boston Celtics, but he still didn’t raise the bar enough against the Miami Heat, especially with the team dealing with the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Allen averaged 10.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 0.8 steals in his two-year stint with the team. Fans think the decision to move on from him was wise as it helped them bag a legitimate partner for Giannis in Dame. However, they hope that Lillard will be able to step up and help the team make another Finals appearance sooner than later.
