By and large, the Milwaukee Bucks were a dominant team in the 40-plus games Adrian Griffin mentored them, but there were still shortcomings that the team wanted to address while it’s still not too late.
Hence, the decision to fire Griffin. Enter NBA champion head coach Doc Rivers, whose looming reign in Milwaukee is expected to introduce some key change. Eric Nehm of The Athletic floated the idea that Rivers may change the way the Milwaukee Bucks view the importance of offensive rebounding and wanting to score points off of their misses to benefit the team’s defense.
Under Griffin, the Bucks wanted to crash the offensive glass and players were encouraged to try to get second-chance points. They weren’t good at it though as the Bucks currently sit 25th in offensive rebounding rate this season. Even with their lack of success on the offensive glass, the Bucks still have produced strong offensive numbers overall. Maybe Rivers will opt against crashing for extra possessions and instead focus on getting back on defense.
Doc River May Change the Way The Milwaukee Bucks View Offensive Rebounding
For what it’s worth, the Bucks are among the worst in the NBA in terms of defensive points in transition. They are 24th overall with 15.0 fastbreak points allowed per game. There’s probably no point for them to continue being overly aggressive in hunting for offensive rebounds especially since they’re still just lagging behind most other teams in that department, as mentioned by Nehm. On the season, the Milwaukee Bucks are only 24th with a 22.8 percent offensive rebound rate.

They’re so efficient on offense that they have fewer opportunities, especially being a great 3 point shooting team (where the easiest OREBs come from). They don’t really need to hunt them, but have had some success with the bigs and with AJJ occasionally sneaking in for one (Marjon gets a few but often gets stuffed and doesn’t convert, which is part of the low scoring rate on them; several other players also fail to finish when they get one).
Good athletes should be able to read the carom and be in position to either attack it or get back if he knows it isn’t in reach. It’s something you should always be looking for but not actively hunting every time.
