The Milwaukee Brewers would have preferred talking about a series win or about their next matchup in the 2024 MLB playoffs. Instead, Willy Adames and company are left dealing with the heartbreak of a loss at the hands of the New York Mets Thursday night. The Brewers are now out of World Series contention after suffering a 4-2 defeat to Pete Alonso and the Mets.
With their season reaching an end, the Brewers have nothing to look forward to in this campaign. For Adames, the attention shifts to MLB free agency and whether he will still be in Milwaukee threads in the 2025 season.
Adames is considered a top shortstop in the next MLB free agency. His next destination has always been an intriguing topic ever since he signed a one-year deal worth $12.25 million with the Brewers to avoid arbitration.
Milwaukee Brewers’ Willy Adames speaks up about his looming free-agent status
After the series loss to the Mets, the 29-year-old Adames said that he doesn’t have an idea yet about what his future will look like or whether he’d still be with Milwaukee beyond the 2024 campaign.
“I don’t know if I’m going to come back, Adames told reporters in the locker room, per David Gasper of Reviewing the Brew.
“I say I hope. If not, it’s been a hell of a time here”
Adames’ 2024 season is one of his better years in the big leagues. He finished the regular season slashing .251/.331/.462 with career highs in home runs and stolen bases, recording 32 and 21, respectively. In the playoffs, he went just 2-for-11 with a walk and three strikeouts through three games against the Mets.
It will be interesting to see how much effort the Brewers will put into trying to retain the services of Adames, who should attract plenty of attention from teams in bigger markets.
