The Milwaukee Brewers are always looking at ways to improve their roster. On September 1 rosters will expand from 26 active players to 28 and there are some good internal candidates to consider. Externally nearly a dozen players were recently placed on waivers and if claimed before Friday they will be post-season eligible. Let’s take a look at who is all available and which ones could fill roles on the Brewers.
Six of the players on waivers are from the Los Angeles Angels. Others came from the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, and Detroit Tigers. Among players eligible to be claimed are: Lucas Giolito, Mike Clevinger, Carlos Carrasco, Matt Moore, Reynaldo Lopez, Jose Cisnero, Dominic Leone, Josh Donaldson, Harrison Bader, Hunter Renfroe, and Randal Grichuk.
Four players on waivers who could fill roles on the Milwaukee Brewers.
- Lucas Giolito – Starting Pitcher
Lucas Giolito’s tenure with the Angels was not a good one as he pitched to a 6.89 ERA over six starts. However he still has good swing and miss stuff and could fill the role of a starting pitcher or swing man for Milwaukee. Adrian Houser was recently placed on the IL and there is a void in the starting rotation.
- Mike Clevinger – Starting Pitcher
Overall 32 year old Mike Clevinger is having a solid season. Through 18 starts he has a 3.32 ERA. His strikeout numbers are down this year, but he most recently struck out 10 Oakland Athletics. Even though he was not great with the San Diego Padres in the post-season a year ago he would be a big boost for any playoff contending team.
- Matt Moore – Reliever
For the second consecutive season left-handed reliever Matt Moore is thriving. He posted a 1.95 ERA with Texas in 2022 and has a 2.30 ERA with the Angels this year. Outside of Hoby Milner the Brewers currently have struggling Andrew Chafin as their second left-handed option. Matt Moore could fill that role, but also Milwaukee has Robert Gasser and Aaron Ashby to take into consideration as well.
- Hunter Renfroe – Outfielder
During the off-season Milwaukee traded Hunter Renfroe to Los Angeles for three pitching prospects. Elvis Peguero has been the biggest contributor out of that group and is currently the team’s seventh inning guy. If the Brewers wanted to bring back Renfroe he would be an improvement over Tyrone Taylor. Even with Taylor currently on a hot streak, Renfroe would provide a bigger boost against left-handed pitchers, more power at the plate, and would be a much better pinch hitting threat should he come off the bench.
There are just over 20 teams ahead of the Brewers on the waiver order, so the odds of a successful waiver claim on any of these players are slim.
