The Milwaukee Brewers uniquely acquired Shelby Miller at the trade deadline this year from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Even more interesting than the trade itself, is the fact that the Brew Crew added Miller knowing he was on the mend from a flexor tendon strain. Turns out, he was nearing a return at the time of the trade deadline, and he recently shined in his first, and possibly last, rehab outing for the Brewers.

A unique trade brought Shelby Miller to the Milwaukee Brewers

With the cost of pitchers being a premium at the trade deadline, Milwaukee managed to add Miller by also taking on the injured Jordan Montgomery, who won’t throw a pitch for the Brewers this year due to recovering from Tommy John surgery. In order to acquire Miller and Montgomery, the Diamondbacks asked for a player to be named later and about $2.0 million in cash. Essentially, Matt Arnold managed to add a back end of the bullpen reliever for a player to be named later and cash.

On August 5, Miller appeared in a Triple-A game for the Brewers, his first live action since July 5. Miller ended up striking out the side, threw 10 of 17 pitches for strikes, and his fastball sat in the 95-96 MPH range while maxing out at 97 MPH.

The Brewers will see how Miller responds following this outing, but it is possible that this rehab appearance could be his last, and that he could join Milwaukee in the near future.
