The Milwaukee Brewers are in a unique position where they have a lot of MLB talent and a very deep farm system. This could lead them to take a calculated risk by trading for an available San Diego Padres front line starter, who is also a rental.
San Diego Padres front line starter available via trade
According to Ken Rosenthal at The Athletic, Padres pitcher Michael King is among the players who remain in play on the trade market. King is entering his final year of arbitration. His 2025 salary is not yet set as he filed for $8.8 million and San Diego countered at $7.3 million.
What would it cost to acquire Michael King?
If San Diego was to trade King, his price tag would be lower than current teammate Dylan Cease, who is also a trade candidate and a rental. With two front line starting pitchers on the block, the Padres likely would be looking for at least one MLB ready pitcher, or a highly regarded pitching prospect, plus at least one other player.

This trade proposal sends two top 30 prospects to the Friars. Rodriguez made his MLB debut a season ago, has a wide arsenal of pitchers, and could potentially benefit from learning from the likes of Yu Darvish, who also throws the kitchen sink on the mound. On the other hand, Hunt was a bit of a late bloomer, but he broke out last year as he had a 2.03 ERA across 102 innings pitched, with the last of them coming in Double-A.
In the short term, acquiring King would strengthen the Brewers’ starting rotation, as he is coming off a season in which he posted a 2.95 ERA over a career-high 172.2 innings pitched. It’s also possible that with another strong year, he could be in line for a big contract next season. If that’s the case, Milwaukee would find it advantageous to extend him a qualifying offer next off-season, thus securing a compensatory draft pick when he signs elsewhere in free agency.
