The Milwaukee Brewers have managed to be the seventh highest scoring team in the league this year by utilizing a deep lineup that focuses on contact, speed, and taking good at-bats. Power is one area they are lacking, currently ranked 23rd with just 101 home runs on the season.

Of the currently healthy members of the Brewers, just Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio have made it into double digit home run totals. Yelich just hit his 20th of the year, reaching that mark for the first time since 2019, and Chourio has 17. Rhys Hoskins, who will be out of the lineup until mid-to-late August with a thumb sprain, currently has 12 long balls.

This makes looking for a power bat before the July 31 trade deadline an easy decision. The cost of acquiring Eugenio Suárez is likely to steep for the Brewers, but a MLB Insider did just confirm that the organization has shown interest in left-handed hitter Ryan O’Hearn.

Surprisingly, the Baltimore Orioles are sellers at this year’s trade deadline. One trade candidate of theirs is rental 1B/OF Ryan O’Hearn. The 32 year old is due approximately $2.5 million the remainder of the season, has 12 home runs on the season, a .827 OPS, and 41 walks to 59 strikeouts.

Ken Rosenthal reported this information, and pointed out that while O’Hearn would not be a perfect fit, Milwaukee would have no issues getting him at-bats at either first base, left field, or designated hitter.

Would the team keep Jake Bauers if they acquired Ryan O’Hearn?

Milwaukee Brewers first base Jake Bauers (9) hits an RBI single during the eighth inning of their game against the Houston Astros Monday, May 5, 2025 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Right now, Brewers left-handed power bench bat Jake Bauers is on the injured list with a shoulder issue. He received a cortisone injection into the shoulder over the All-Star break and is expected to return this season. Bauers came up huge for Milwaukee in the post season last year and is having a nice season in 2025, under limited playing time.

If Milwaukee was to acquire a player like O’Hearn, retaining someone like Bauers would still have benefit. Even though O’Hearn would likely occupy Bauers role, maybe even in a higher capacity, keeping Bauers as a late game pinch hitter, a role he is familiar with, could pay dividends in key moments down the road.
