Milwaukee Brewers first baseman/designated hitter Rhys Hoskins has exercised an $18 million player option for next season. This puts him on track to return to the Brew Crew in 2025 in which he will be looking to improve upon his performance from a season ago.
Rhys Hosksins had a player option for the 2025 season
When the Brewers signed Rhys Hoskins last winter they agreed on a two year, $34 million guaranteed deal. The $34 million was only guaranteed if he didn’t opt out after the first year. It also has the potential to reach $52 million as there is a mutual option attached to the 2026 season with a $4 million buyout.
The Milwaukee Brewers will need more production out of Rhys Hoskins in 2025
2024 was Rhys Hoskins first season back after missing all of the 2023 campaign recovering from ACL reconstruction. While he did hit 26 home runs and drive in 82 runs, he also posted career worsts in several offensive categories including batting average (.214), on base percentage (.303), slugging percentage (.419), on base plus slugging percentage (.722), OPS+ (98), BB% (10.3), K% (28.8), hard hit % (42.3), exit velocity (88.7 MPH), and WAR (-0.2).
Could the Milwaukee Brewers trade Rhys Hoskins this off-season?
At an $18 million base salary next year, the Brewers will be overpaying Rhys Hoskins if he performs similar to how he did a season ago. It’s logical to think that in his second season following ACL surgery that his numbers will progress closer to what he did throughout his entire tenure with the Philadelphia Phillies, but he will be 32 years old next season and nothing is a guarantee. Trading him would decrease the payroll and allow Milwaukee to go in a different direction.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Rhys Hoskins this off-season. Hoskins exercising his player option has him on track to return to the Brewers in 2025, but a trade could change that.
