The 2024 Milwaukee Brewers roster is starting to take shape. Within the past few weeks the team has added two free agent bats and acquired a versatile infielder in the Corbin Burnes trade. It is possible that there are more moves to come, but with spring training games scheduled to start in a few week we should have a good idea as to which players the Brew Crew will be counting on offensively.
In this article we will briefly take a look at all the internal and external 40-man roster additions made this off-season. We also will project the ideal batting lineup against both right-handed and left-handed pitchers.
Who have the Milwaukee Brewers all added this off-season and who could factor into the batting order?
Internal additions:
- C Jeferson Quero
- OF Jackson Chourio
- OF Chris Roller (acquired via trade during the 2023 season, but was not added to the 40-man roster until October)
External additions:
- C Eric Haase
- C Gary Sanchez
- 1B Rhys Hoskins
- 1B Jake Bauers
- INF Oliver Dunn
- INF Vinny Capra
- INF Joey Ortiz
Out of these additions there is a strong possibility that Chourio, Sanchez, Hoskins, and Bauers will all be on the opening day roster. A wildcard internal addition that was not mentioned is prospect Tyler Black. The speedy infielder could play his way onto the team with a strong spring training.
Assuming the rest of the above mentioned additions are off the 26-,man roster, other 40-man roster members who are on the bubble of making the opening day roster include Owen Miller, Andruw Monasterio, Blake Perkins, Joey Wiemer, and Jahmai Jones.
Projected Milwaukee Brewers lineup against right-handed pitchers.
- LF Christian Yelich
- C William Contreras
- 1B Rhys Hoskins
- SS Willy Adames
- DH Gary Sanchez
- CF Sal Frelick
- RF Jackson Chourio
- 2B Brice Turang
- 3B Joey Ortiz
This projected lineup leaves out lefty hitters Garrett Mitchell and Jake Bauers. They were strongly considered in which Mitchell could play any of the outfield spots, but has primarily been a center fielder and Frelick did play right field last year. Overall there is a lot of versatility with the outfield group and at some point in the season we could see all three “kids” in the grass with Yelich at designated hitter.
On the other hand Bauers was left out of the lineup because Hoskins is occupying his defensive position at first base and the Brewers $7 million contract to Sanchez indicates that they want him in the lineup frequently. Unfortunately this leaves Bauers in a bit of a tough spot and as the odd man out.
In regards to order, the top three batters in Yelich, Contreras, and Hoskins all are proven good on-base percentage guys and between those three you gain power the further down you go. Branching off of that Adames is in cleanup and Sanchez fifth due to their home run potential. After that younger players get mixed in by alternating them in a lefty then righty fashion.
Projected Milwaukee Brewers lineup against left-handed pitchers.
- LF Christian Yelich
- C William Contreras
- 1B Rhys Hoskins
- SS Willy Adames
- DH Gary Sanchez
- CF Jackson Chourio
- 3B Joey Ortiz
- 2B Andruw Monasterio
- RF Joey Wiemer
This lineup features no change through the first five batters, but then Chourio gets bumped up a spot, Ortiz two spots, and then righties Monasterio and Wiemer round out the lineup. Monasterio has logged over 1,700 minor league innings at second base and replaces Turang whereas Wiemer is chosen over Frelick.
Another interesting aspect to take into consideration regarding lineup construction is that Pat Murphy will be writing the batting order. We’ve grown accustomed to the way Craig Counsell operated and it’s possible that Murphy does things similar, but we don’t know for sure yet.

The Brewers stink. Their owner is a joke, and they’ll be lucky to win 75 games. Pure garbage and I’ve loved this team since 1972.
