The Milwaukee Brewers have a reputation around the league for maximizing a pitchers potential. Whether the player was drafted by them or acquired from an outside organization they have a top secret mysterious pitching lab that gets a lot of credit for their success. Recently Senior Writer at Sports Illustrated Tom Verducci revealed how much that lab cost the Brew Crew.
Where is the Milwaukee Brewers pitching lab, what is all in it, and how much did it cost?
The Brewers pitching lab is located in Arizona at their Spring Training facility. What is in it has remained a secret, but the complex is said to be about 80 feet by 25 feet and contain high tech equipment. Per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel every pitcher that is in big league camp with them in February/March throws in the pitching lab. Tom Verducci recently casually dropped the cost of the lab ($60 million) in an article highlighting the team’s success.
Tom Verducci highlighted one specific player who has benefited from the Milwaukee Brewers pitching lab this year.
In the same article mentioned above Tom Verducci highlighted Frankie Montas. Verducci discussed that since he has arrived his arm slot has risen a few inches, his fastball velocity has increased, and his fastball usage has increased from 67% to 82%. The results have been him pitching to a 3.82 ERA over his first six starts with the team.
The Milwaukee Brewers use pitchers strengths and use their lab to build upon them.
While what is inside the Brewers pitching lab has remained a secret their philosophy for pitchers who enter has become known. Numerous pitchers have said that Milwaukee does not try to implement a lot of changes, but rather they take what a pitcher already does well and build upon it.
While not yet getting the proper recognition Milwaukee does the same thing with their hitters as they have embraced the motto “you-be-you” and let hitters build upon what has made the successful before arriving in the organization.
