The Milwaukee Brewers have a few decisions to make over the course of the next week as two off-season deadlines are rapidly approaching. First up is the deadline to add players to the 40-man roster in order to protect them from the Rule-5 draft and then secondly there is the non-tender deadline.
On November 14 at 5:00 p.m. CT the deadline to add Rule-5 draft eligible players to the 40-man roster will pass. The Rule-5 draft takes place during winter meetings and allows teams to select certain players from other clubs and put them on their 40-man roster. Last year the Brewers selected Gus Varland, but he was returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers during the season. Rule-5 draft eligible players can be protected from the draft by being placed on the 40-man roster prior to the November 14 deadline.
November 17 at 7:00 p.m CT is the non-tender deadline. By that date and time teams must formally tender players contracts for the 2024 season that includes those that are arbitration eligible. An exact dollar amount does not have to be agreed upon at that time, but if a player is non-tendered they become a free agent.
What transactions might occur to the Milwaukee Brewers roster prior to these deadlines?
This year some notable Brewers prospects who are Rule-5 draft eligible include Jeferson Quero, Bradley Blalock, Freddy Zamora, Justin Yeager, and Evan McKendry. There are lots of other eligible players as well, but among the names listed Jeferson Quero is seemingly the only true lock to be added to the 40-man roster and protected from the Rule-5 draft.
Among the arbitration eligible players there are a few non-tender candidates. Brandon Woodruff is one big name who could not receive a contract for 2024. Additionally Rowdy Tellez and Adrian Houser are each projected to make more than $5.00 MM and could be in danger of being let go.
Other possibilities prior to the non-tender deadline included players being traded. Milwaukee could look to do this with some of their non-tender candidates. On the contrary contract extensions could be announced at this time as well.
It will be interesting to see what the Milwaukee Brewers elect to do over the next week.
