The Milwaukee Brewers are in a bit of a rut, having gone just 5-5 in their last 10 games. They are still a game and a half up on the Chicago Cubs, however, with a record of 27-20. Their 3-2 loss to the lowly Miami Marlins on Monday night was called the worst loss of the season by many fans on social media. Despite Christian Yelich stealing two bases, including a straight steal of home, the Brewers’ offense lacked timely hitting and defensive efforts were called into question.
Baseball is a game of streaks, especially considering it is a 162-game long season. There are times when even the best hitters struggle before getting hot again. However, some slumps become habits and, oftentimes, a hitter reveals who they really are outside of a handful of hot streaks.
This seems to be the way many Brewers fans are beginning to view shortstop Willy Adames, who was once the most beloved player on the team.
Milwaukee Brewers Shortstop Willy Adames Was Once a Fan-Favorite
It was three years ago today, May 21, that the Brewers acquired Adames in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. Adames, along with Trevor Richards, were acquired for relievers Drew Rasmussen and JP Feyereisen. At the time of the trade, he was hitting .197/.254/.371 for the Rays. After arriving in Milwaukee, he hit .285/.366/.521 with 20 home runs and 58 RBI, and even got some National League MVP votes.
The next season, 2022, Adames put his name in the Brewers’ record book by breaking Robin Yount’s franchise record for home runs in a season by a shortstop. He hit 29 in 1982, but Adames hit 31 bombs 40 years later. However, Adames’ batting statistics declined. His averages dropped to .238/.298/.458 in 2022 despite his high home run total.
Last season, Adames seemed to be in a slump that lasted all season. He hit just .217/.310/.407 with 24 home runs and 80 RBI.
While he got off to a strong start this season, Adames is in the midst of a slump. In his last five games, he is just 1-for-19 at the plate. His strikeout with a runner on third and less than two outs last night was the epitome of everything that went wrong for Milwaukee in their loss.
Milwaukee Brewers Fans No Longer Want Willy Adames
Through 47 games this season, Adames is hitting .232/.309/.405 with seven home runs and 29 RBI. After he went 0-5 with three strikeouts against Miami, Brewers fans took to social media to express their frustrations with him and declare that they no longer would mind if he was traded.
On fan wrote, “Willy Adames sucks. Trade him Hader-style. I don’t care what it does for team morale. He can go hit .220 with 25 HRs on another team.”
Another said, “Willy Adames sold that game he sucks, most overrated player on the team. That .275 avg slipped real quick.”
And another, “Willy Adames is the most overrated brewer. Consistently doesn’t do the simple things in the box. Way too streaky to be a counted on hitter in this lineup. I’m tired of him.”
While fans may not care about team morale, they can be sure the front office does. Adames is such an integral part of the culture in the locker room, especially with so many young players on the roster. While he likely is going to be too expensive for Milwaukee to keep in free agency, losing him in the offseason will be a softer blow than trading him midseason.
