The Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees are slated to begin their 2025 regular season playing against one another, with Opening Day scheduled for Thursday, March 27. This game will take place on the east coast, but recent reports have indicated that the fate of the Yankees Opening Day starter is up in the air.
New York Yankees Opening Day starting pitcher Gerrit Cole to undergo “diagnostic testing”

MLB Network recently revealed that Cole will undergo further testing on his elbow. The 34 year old ace felt some discomfort after his most recent spring training game, which consisted of 54 pitches thrown over 2.2 innings and six runs allowed. Cole missed the start of last year due to nerve inflammation in his elbow and didn’t return until June.
Milwaukee Brewers career statistics vs Gerrit Cole

Cole spent his first five MLB seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and then went on to pitch for the Houston Astros and Yankees. He has made 15 starts against the Brewers throughout his career, throwing 94.0 innings and posting a 3.35 ERA. He’s posted a 10.1 K:9 ratio over those starts while holding the team to a .233/.287/.378 slash line.
If Cole does end up missing Opening Day, the next pitchers in line to get the nod on Opening Day would be either Carlos Rodon or Max Fried. The Yankees are already without Luis Gil, who is shut down to injury.
Regardless of whether Rodon or Fried starts on Opening Day, both are left-handed pitchers. This means that it’s highly likely that Milwaukee sees a pair of southpaws on consecutive days to begin the 2025 campaign.
