The Milwaukee Brewers are one of the most talked about teams of the MLB offseason. This is not because they have been linked to a high-profile free agent, of course. As the smallest market in the league, they rarely make big splash signings.
Instead, the Brewers are brought up often because one of their soon-to-be-former players is himself one of the biggest names on the free agent market. This, of course, is a reference to Willy Adames, who is clearly the best shortstop available for teams to sign.
It has long been accepted that Milwaukee will not be able to afford him, and many were surprised that they did not trade him last offseason, as their usual practice, in order to get prospects in return.
The Milwaukee Brewers Have Been Mentioned in Devin Williams Trade Rumors
Because of the Brewers’ tendency to trade away their stars before they hit free agency, many have assumed that they would trade two-time All-Star closer Devin Williams this offseason. He is entering his final season of club control in 2025 and is highly respected around the league.
After missing most of the 2024 season with stress fractures in his back, Williams returned to post a 1-0 record, 1.25 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 14 saves in 22 appearances.
While the Brewers have publicly stated that they have no intention of trading their closer this offseason, it has not stopped MLB insiders and analysts from proposing trades involving the 2020 NL Rookie of the Year.
MLB Insider Suggests the Milwaukee Brewers Trade Devin Williams to the Texas Rangers
One recent possible trade destination included a team that has rarely been mentioned as a possible participant in the Devin Williams trade sweepstakes: the Texas Rangers.
Kiley McDaniel of ESPN recently wrote:
“After a tough 2024 season, the Rangers are still all-in, paying a combined $128 million to five players next season. They have a playoff-caliber roster but need pitching depth, particularly multiple late-inning types for their bullpen. Williams has only one year of control left, so unlike the Crochet deal, he would cost one of the Rangers’ top young arms, like Alejandro Rosario (93rd on my rankings), Emiliano Teodo or Jack Leiter — or possibly a position player like Justin Foscue.”
There is no question that when and/or if Milwaukee decides to trade Williams, he will fetch a hefty return. The Rangers certainly have the young pitching prospects the Brewers would like in return, so them being a possible trade partner makes sense.
As mentioned, however, the Brewers likely will not move Williams until the trade deadline.
