The Milwaukee Brewers farm system keeps churning out big leaguers: Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick, Brice Turang. More recently, starters Jacob Misiorowski and Logan Henderson have made the trek from A-ball to the big leagues. According to MLB.com, the Brewers still have the second-ranked cache of prospects in all of baseball.
Tuesday, the No. 2 prospect in that system took a significant step up the organizational ladder by playing his first game with the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Shortstop Luis Pena is just 18 years old, but he’s already turned heads since the promotion.

Milwaukee Brewers aren’t certain what position Pena will play, but he’s clearly got promise at the plate
In January 2024, the Brewers signed Pena as an international free agent from the Dominican Republic. Last season, he played 44 games in the Dominican Summer League before taking the field in 2025 for Single-A Carolina.
There, he hit .307/.374/.470 with 40 stolen bases in 71 games. To accommodate fellow shortstop prospect Jesus Made, the Mudcats played Pena all around the infield: 32 starts at short, 15 at second, 10 at third. Back in June, he was named the Carolina League’s Player of the Week.
A position switch could make some sense anyway, as he committed 10 errors at shortstop for Carolina. The Brewers don’t have a clear opening elsewhere on the infield, with Turang playing second base and rookie Caleb Durbin looking like a future roster cog at the hot corner, but they don’t have to worry about that right now. Set to turn 19 in November, Pena is likely still several years away from his debut. The right-handed hitter is not projected to crack the majors until 2028.

Moving up a level in less than a year should help expedite the process. Newbie jitters? Not for this guy, who homered in his first Rattlers at bat.

Naturally, Brewers fans were excited. “Ive seen enough time for AA,” one person commented.
That sentiment garnered plenty of support:
“Objective completed. Time for AA.”
“Send him to [Double-A] Biloxi.”
“He’s gonna be so good.”

Of course, there’s some tongue-in-cheek going on, but the hype is real. While it may be years before Pena digs in for the Brewers, it’s a day to look forward to as he climbs the minor league rungs.
