The Milwaukee Brewers kicked off an important four game series at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Not only were they facing one of the best teams in the National League but on the mound opposing them was future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw. Milwaukee ended up losing by a score of 5-2 and post game manager Pat Murphy said that the team was “affected by the moment”.
Milwaukee Brewers vs Los Angeles Dodgers 8/12/2024 recap.
As mentioned the Dodgers had southpaw Clayton Kershaw on the mound in this game. He underwent shoulder surgery during the off-season and was making just his fourth start of the season. The result was him going a season high 5.2 innings pitched, allowing just one earned run, striking out six, and he was removed just after crossing the 80 pitch mark.
For the Brewers Freddy Peralta was on the mound. Peralta has had an up and down season and in this game the home run ball bit him as he gave up a pair of two run home runs. Former Dodger Bryan Hudson was tagged with one earned run in this contest as well.
Per Curt Hogg Peralta has now given up one home run in every start since June 24 and Hudson has given up an earned run in all three appearances against Los Angeles this season.
The Milwaukee Brewers did not play an inspiring baseball game.
In this game the Brewers only offense came via a William Contreras two run home run. A rally in the second inning was killed by a strike em out throw em out double play in which Contreras was caught trying to steal third base. Additionally with Blake Perkins landing on the IL prior to the game with a calf injury the lineup consisted of left-handed batters Brice Turang, Sal Frelick, and Garrett Mitchell who went a combined 0-11 with six strikeouts.
Pat Murphy says his young Milwaukee Brewers let the moment affect them.
Post game manager Pat Murphy had an interesting quote indicating that he thought his young team let the moment affect them. He cited facing Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers at home as two big factors. Murphy also mentioned that he hadn’t seen this from his team in the past.
“This is it. If you wanna swim with the sharks, you gotta be willing to step up in these situations and forget about who’s on the mound. It’s baseball. Pitch by pitch. I’m not disappointed in any of the guys. I’m not mad or anything like that. I just felt like we didn’t have the right approach there mentally for the situations. But it is young guys. In front of their hometown crowd. It’s Kershaw. That means something.”
-Pat Murphy
The Brewers and Dodgers will play again on Tuesday night. Milwaukee needs to win the next three games in order to win the season series and hold the tie-breaker advantage against Los Angeles. This would be important if the teams finished with the same record at seasons end and seeding would be based on head-to-head record.
