The Milwaukee Brewers have not made any big splashes in free agency. They have, however, lost one of their biggest stars, shortstop, Willy Adames, to the San Francisco Giants and a seven-year $182 million contract. Additionally, they have seen other key players, notably starting pitchers, depart for other teams.
Frankie Montas, who was acquired in a mid-season trade with the Cincinnati Reds, signed a three-year contract with the New York Mets. However, an injury is going to keep him sidelined for the next couple of months.
Colin Rea, who made the second-most starts for Milwaukee in 2024, was non-tendered and has since signed with the Chicago Cubs.
While the Brewers have added Nestor Cortes via the Devin Williams trade, they used 17 starting pitchers last season, indicating that they really cannot have enough starting pitchers.
The Milwaukee Brewers Are Rumored to Have Interest in Jose Quintana

While the high-profile free agent starting pitchers are already off the market (not like the Brewers would have made a play for them anyway), there are still a few quality starters remaining. The best of these is Brewer killer Jose Quintana, who just turned down a contract offer from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
According to MLB insider Hector Gomez, Milwaukee is one of a handful of teams that have expressed interest in the veteran left-handed pitcher:
“SOURCE: #Mets, #Rangers, #Padres, #Braves and #Brewers are showing interest in Jose Quintana, who was close to reaching an agreement with the #Pirates, but he declined their offer. Quintana is the best starting pitcher free agent available.”
Last season, Quintana was 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA for the Mets while making 31 starts. For his career, he is 102-103 with a 3.74 ERA.
In 23 career games against Milwaukee, Quintana is 9-7 with a 2.98 ERA and 131 strikeouts. Those numbers, however, do not look as great at American Family Field, though they still are not terrible.
In 12 career games against the Brewers in Milwaukee, he is 5-4 with a 3.90 ERA and 71 strikeouts.
