Frankie Montas, a 31 year old right-handed pitcher, has reportedly signed a contract with the New York Mets. He spent the 2024 season with the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds, but started his career by playing for the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, and New York Yankees. This signing, made by Mets executive David Stearns, represents another union of former Brewers players to join the Mets.

According to multiple reports, Frankie Montas has signed a two year contract with the Mets. This deal totals $34 million and includes a player opt out option after the first season. His base salary will be $17 million each season.

Although David Stearns and Frankie Montas’ time in Milwaukee did not overlap, there still is some symmetry in the fact that Stearns has acquired a lot of former Brewers players since taking over last winter. A few include Jesse Winker, Tyrone Taylor, Adrian Houser, Kevin Herget, Pablo Reyes, Jakson Reetz, and several other minor league players.
David Stearns discusses his strategy on building a starting rotation for the 2025 season

At this point in his career, Frankie Montas is a bit of a reclamation project given the fact that he is a few years removed from the last time he finished with an ERA under 4.00. This makes him signing for $17 million a season a bit surprising, but the funds available in New York are drastically different than in Milwaukee; where they turned down his $20 million option earlier in the off-season. All that being said, David Stearns doesn’t feel strongly about how he goes about forming the Mets starting rotation in 2025, but he is utilizing a similar approach to last winter when he signed bounce back candidates Sean Manaea and Luis Severino to deals over market value.
“I think the way we built our rotation last offseason was successful. I think we are seeking to build another successful rotation however it occurs and you can do that in a variety of different ways. I don’t feel beholden to do it in any particular way.”
