The Milwaukee Brewers are busy constructing their roster for the 2025 MLB season. They have already taken part in one major trade, sending Devin Williams to the New York Yankees for left-handed starting pitcher Nestor Cortes and infield prospect Caleb Durbin. Of course, this trade occurred after shortstop Willy Adames signed a massive seven-year $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants.
The addition of Cortes will help Milwaukee fill some holes in their starting rotation that were left by the departures of other pitchers. Durbin, who can play second and third base, will allow Pat Murphy to move either Brice Turang or Joey Ortiz to move to shortstop and replace Adames.
But Durbin has no Major League experience, so if the Brewers want a solid defender that is more of a known commodity, they could pursue one specific player in free agency.
The Milwaukee Brewers Could Pursue Ha-Seong Kim in Free Agency
In a recent article in which each team writer that works for MLB.com listed one realistic free agent their teams could sign, Brewers insider Adam McCalvy suggested that Milwaukee look at former San Diego Padres infielder Ha-Seong Kim.
“There’s significant risk involved with Kim because a shoulder injury will delay the start of his 2025 season. But there could also be significant upside in a one-year deal with the 29-year-old, who would have been a prominent free agent this winter had he not been injured.
“Kim is coming off four years with the Padres in which he compiled 15.3 bWAR, and he won a Rawlings Gold Glove Award at second base in 2023 while also starting games for San Diego at shortstop and third base. That sort of flexibility that would come in handy as the Brewers decide how to configure their terrific infield in the wake of shortstop Willy Adames’ departure.”
As McCalvy notes, Kim has a Gold Glove on his resume, which he won in 2023. He also has played both second and third base, as well as shortstop. Defensively, he would fit right in.
Like many players that Murphy and the Brewers like to put in their lineup, Kim is a speedster. He has 60 stolen bases over the last two years, with a career-high of 38 coming in 2023.
He does not, though, have the power of Adames. For his career, Kim has a .242/.326/.380 slash line. His best season was that 2023 campaign in which he played 152 games, hit .260/.351/.398 with 17 home runs and 60 RBI.
Whether or not Milwaukee will add another infielder remains to be seen, but if they do, Kim does sound like the kind of player the Brewers would typically pursue.
