Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Chase Shugart was thrown into the fire right away in his first appearance in the big leagues since being activated from the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation. Against the red-hot Milwaukee Brewers on Monday at American Family Field in Milwaukee, the Pirates called on Shugart to be the first pitcher from the bullpen to face the National League-leading host team.
The 28-year-old Shugart had a solid three-inning stint on the mound after replacing starter Andrew Heaney, allowing just an earned run on two hits and zero walks. He had five strikeouts and 30 of his 44 pitches went for strikes.
“It’s a scrappy lineup,” Shugart said following the Pirates’ 7-1 loss at the hands of the Brewers, per Rich Rovito of MLB’s website. “They’re putting contact on the ball, and they’ll fight you on pitches that you think would end up punching them out. Just being able to execute and get them out of their rhythm was probably key to the success today.”
Through 33 appearances in the 2025 MLB regular season, Shugart has a 4-3 record to go with a 3.64 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. He entered the Brewers game with a .209 BABIP, which suggests some struggles down the road, but he will look to build on his strong performance on Monday as he continues his campaign.

Milwaukee Brewers drub Pirates for 10th straight victory

Fresh off a three-game sweep of the New York Mets, the Brewers sustained their form and clobbered the Pirates.
Jose Quintana pitched six innings of one-run ball while the offense hummed behind him. Brice Turang set the tone with a solo 406-foot home run in the first inning, while six Milwaukee players had an RBI each.
The Brewers will look to keep it going this Tuesday when they face an elite arm in the form of Pirates All-Star hurler Paul Skenes, while Milwaukee is expected to give the ball to Freddy Peralta.
