The Milwaukee Brewers have been in trade rumors for seeking starting pitching as well as left-handed hitters. Starting pitching has been a need for them all season whereas Ken Rosenthal was the first to link them to a left-handed batter. Now MLB Insider Robert Murray has suggested that opposing organizations view Garrett Mitchell as a trade piece for Milwaukee to use in order to acquire starting pitching.
Robert Murray didn’t suggest that the Milwaukee Brewers are looking to trade Garrett Mitchell.
In Robert Murray’s revealing report about Garrett Mitchell being rumored as a trade piece for starting pitching he didn’t suggest that the Brewers are actively looking to trade him. It is true that Mitchell’s name has come up in trade discussions, but it was a rival executive’s belief that Mitchell could be used as a trade piece in order to acquire starting pitching.
One name that has come up in trade talks involving the Milwaukee Brewers is outfielder Garrett Mitchell, sources say. It’s unclear how willing the Brewers are to move the young left-handed hitter, especially after Christian Yelich was placed on the Injured List with a back injury. But one rival executive in contact with Milwaukee viewed Mitchell as a potential trade piece to acquire a starting pitcher.

Should the Brewers be willing to trade former first round pick Garrett Mitchell?
As the former 20th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft the verdict is still out on how good Garrett Mitchell will be at the big league level. His stock is still high but shoulder surgery cost him most of the 2023 season and he didn’t make a big league appearance in 2024 until July due to a hand fracture sustained in March. The 25 year old has just 192 career plate appearances, but has shown improved plate discipline and has decreased his strikeout percentage since making his MLB debut in 2022. All of this leads to an interesting debate as to whether Milwaukee should be willing to trade him or not in order to fill needs on their 2024 roster.
If Garrett Mitchell is traded the Milwaukee Brewers would still have good outfield depth.
Trading from a position of depth is a strategy that a lot of organizations do and the Milwaukee Brewers could afford to trade Garrett Mitchell if they desire. Even with Christian Yelich on the injured list they would still have an outfield consisting of Sal Frelick, Jackson Chourio, and Blake Perkins. They also have Joey Wiemer (has been on a tear at the plate in July) and Tyler Black (has resumed playing outfield this year) in the minor leagues along with slugger Brewer Hicklen who was recently added to the 40-man roster.
It will be interesting to see what happens, or doesn’t happen, with Garrett Mitchell. The MLB Trade Deadline is July 30.
