The Milwaukee Brewers gave Freddy Peralta the ball for game one of the Wild Card Series against the New York Mets. He got tagged with three earned runs in the second inning but then retired nine batters in a row before being removed prior to the start of the fifth inning. Here we take a look at Pat Murphy’s explanation for Peralta’s early exit as well as some fan reactions.
Freddy Peralta was removed after four innings pitched and 68 pitches thrown.
After striking out a pair of batters in the first inning Freddy Peralta ran into some trouble in the second. That inning began with the first three batters all reaching base safely and ultimately scoring. Mark Vientos singles to get thing started, Pete Alono drew a walk on seven pitches, and then Jesse Winker tripled home two runs. Winker then went on to score on a sacrifice fly a batter later, but from there Peralta retired nine consecutive batters before being removed after four innings pitched.
Pat Murphy breaks down his decision to remove Freddy Peralta.
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Curt Hogg provided a full explanation as to why Pat Murphy removed Freddy Peralta. His answer included points like not wanting to face the Mets lineup a third time, throwing 70 emotional pitches, wanting to turn the game over to his bullpen with the lead, feeling confident in Joel Payamps, and not wanting to delay getting to the bullpen so that they could better play match ups.

Milwaukee Brewers fans react to the decision to pull Freddy Peralta early and Pat Murphy’s explanation.
That’s good with me, 3rd time through the order. Bullpen has to execute

I disagree. He’s your ace. He got back into a groove. Then you yanked him.

Stop trying to change the stuff that has worked all year. Let the guy you gave the ball to in Game 1 go. Don’t pull him in a spot where he’s got 789 coming up with under 70 pitches and the lead. Let him get those three guys and then go grab the bullpen. Doing too damn much.
