The Milwaukee Brewers got a taste of their own medicine during game 1 of the Wild Card Series as their opponent, the New York Mets, scored five runs in the fifth inning with two outs. Contributing to this was a pair of atypical defensive miscues by a team that prides itself on its defense. Here we take a further look at how the Brewers unraveled in the fifth inning.
Two Milwaukee Brewers defensive miscues extended the fifth inning.
In the fifth inning Joel Payamps relieved Freddy Peralta. Payamps got help from Jackson Chourio to get the first out as Chourio made a leaping grab at the wall to record the first out. A batter later Chourio took a bad route on a fly ball and was unable to make the catch as he made a leaping attempt at it. Mets batter Tyrone Taylor was credited with a double on the play.
After Taylor’s double Payamps got an easy fly out for the second out. From there seven straight Mets proceeded to reach base safely against Payamps and Aaron Ashby. Francisco Lindor drew a walk, Jose Iglesias reached on an infield single in which Payamps was late covering first base, Mark Vientos singled (Willy Adames bobbled the ball on a sliding attempt, would have been a tough play for an out) Pete Alonso was walked, J.D. Martinez singled, and Starling Marte walked.

Brewers reliever Aaron Ashby faced five batters in the inning and did not record an out. Nick Mears replaced him and left the bases loaded as Tyrone Taylor flew out to end the inning.
The Brewers bullpen and defense had been strengths all season.
This year Milwaukee had the best National League bullpen ERA at 3.11 and their defense was one of the best units in the league. Unfortunately both let them down in game one against the Mets and one inning was the major difference in the outcome of this game.
The Brewers and Mets will square off for game two of the Wild Card Series on Wednesday, October 2. Frankie Montas will get the ball for Milwaukee and Sean Manaea for New York.
