The Milwaukee Brewers have had the same two catchers on their Major League roster all season long. William Contreras, a two-time All-Star, has received the majority of the starts at the position (as he has in each of the past two seasons) while Eric Haase has appeared in 30 games.
Contreras, though, is only hitting .242/.342/.340 with six home runs and 42 RBI this season while playing through a fractured finger on his left hand. Haase is hitting .229/.289/.357 with two home runs and nine RBI in his limited playing time.
And while the production from these players has left a great deal to be desired, Milwaukee just acquired another catcher, Appleton West High school graduate Danny Jansen, from the Tampa Bay Rays. He is hitting just .204/.314/.389 with 11 home runs and 29 RBI this season.
Milwaukee Brewers Fans Are Enraged that the Team Traded for Danny Jansen

In return for Jansen, the Brewers sent Wisconsin Timber Rattlers infielder Jadher Areinamo, their 24th overall prospect, to Tampa Bay. He is hitting .297/.355/.463 with 11 home runs, 51 RBI, and 15 stolen bases this season.
Many fans believe that Milwaukee, who (as mentioned) already has two catchers, overpaid for Jansen:

And while one can understand Brewers fans’ frustration just by looking at Areinamo’s numbers, it is worth noting that he is nearly as far away from the Majors as Jesus Made and Luis Pena, two of Milwaukee’s prospects that are ranked in MLB’s top-100 and play the same positions as him.
Furthermore, Curt Hogg reports that Areinamo’s swing decisions were so poor, the Brewers had to have a sit down with him during Spring Training, but did not see much of an improvement from him in that department:
Jadher Areinamo was ranked as the Brewers No. 21 prospect in our midseason updates. He hit .292 in 211 games at High-A, but part of the reason he was still there was his swing decisions. Brewers had a sitdown with him in spring about it but didn’t see enough of a mindset change.

The real question, then, is what the trade means for Contreras and Haase. Milwaukee previously stated that if they were to put their two-time All-Star catcher on the IL due to his fracture finger, he would get season-ending surgery.
He is in the lineup for Monday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
The other notion is that Haase could be sent to Triple-A in the wake of Jeferson Quero re-injuring his shoulder in Nashville and needing to be out for 3-4 weeks.
In any case, there are sure to be more moves coming, and the true reasoning behind this deal will be known soon.
