The Milwaukee Brewers traded away closer Devin Williams to the New York Yankees this offseason. Milwaukee is trying to find a new closer for the 2025 MLB season. The Brewers traded him away with one year remaining on his contract.
A lot of Brewers fans liked that they traded away Williams this offseason. Nestor Cortes Jr. and Caleb Durin were acquired in the trade for Devin Williams. It will not be easy for them to replace the closer for the 2025 MLB season.
Tanner Scott Could Sign With the Milwaukee Brewers This Offseason To Replace Devin Williams
Tanner Scott is still a free agent and he pitched with the San Diego Padres last season. The Athletic predicts that he will sign a four-year deal worth $64 million in free agency. The Athletic said about Scott:
“Tantalizing but extremely wild early in his career, Scott has emerged as one of the game’s top left-handed relievers by improving his walk rate from abysmal to merely run-of-the-mill bad. He was a first-time All-Star last season, despite walking 4.5 per nine innings, because his upper-90s fastball and high-80s slider are among the most overpowering combos in baseball.
Scott has a 2.04 ERA with 188 strikeouts in 150 innings over the past two seasons while shutting down both lefties (.167) and righties (.194), making him a near-lock to secure the biggest payday of any reliever in this free-agent class, even if some teams are scared away by his erratic pre-2023 work.”
They have the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the San Diego Padres as the best landing spots for Tanner Scott. However, si.com writer Curt Bishop thinks that the Milwaukee Brewers could be a landing spot for Scott as well. Bishop said:
“Scott posted a 1.75 ERA in 72 appearances and saved 22 games for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres in 2024. He’ll likely be too expensive for the Brewers, but it might not be a bad idea to at least enter the sweepstakes if they want to remain at the top of the NL Central.”
The Milwaukee Brewers have won the National League Central Title for the last two seasons. If they lose out on Scott to the Chicago Cubs, that would not be a good thing for the Brewers.
