Former Milwaukee Brewers star relief pitcher Devin Williams has the reputation of being one of the best closers in the game. However, Williams, who is now with the New York Yankees, did not have a fantastic 2024 MLB playoffs, particularly during the National League Wild-Card round against the New York Mets.
It can be recalled that Williams gave up four earned runs, including Pete Alonso’s go-ahead, three-run blast in the ninth inning of the deciding Game 3 of that matchup.
Despite that tough ending to Williams’ time with the Brewers, the 30-year-old pitcher maintains a resilient attitude.
“To be honest, the way my mind works, every failure I’ve ever had has stuck with me,” Williams said during a Zoom news conference (h/t Anthony Rieber of Newsday).
“But it’s not something that holds me back. If anything, it pushes me forward. Every time I fail, I want to get back on the mound to right myself. That’s how I’ve been every time I failed. I’ve blown saves before. The next day, I want the ball again. I want to get out there and put up a zero and help my team win,” Williams added.
Ex-Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams starting a new career chapter with the New York Yankees
That home run from Alonso is all behind Williams now, as he embarks on a new chapter in his baseball career.
After spending his first six seasons in the big leagues with the Brewers, Williams is now going to pitch for the Yankees, who acquired him from Milwaukee via a trade. In exchange, the Brewers got pitcher Nestor Cortes, infielder Caleb Durbin and cash considerations.
So far in his career in the big leagues, Williams owns a 1.83 ERA and 2.39 FIP along with a 232 ERA+ across 241 appearances (232.2 innings).
