The Milwaukee Brewers are in need of some starting pitching depth as they prepare for the 2025 MLB season. Freddy Peralta, the ace of the staff, led the team with 32 starts last year, but he was the only one who eclipsed 30 starts on the Brewers roster. Colin Rea, who made 27 starts, was non-tendered and will not return to the team. Tobias Myers, who made 25 starts, will return, but he was the only other Milwaukee starting pitcher with more than 14 starts.
Nestor Cortes, who was acquired from the New York Yankees in the Devin Williams trade, made 30 starts last season, which should help.
But if 2024 taught the Brewers anything, it is that they cannot have too many starting pitchers because injuries can pop up out of nowhere.
What Does the 2025 Milwaukee Brewers Starting Rotation Look Like Right Now?
As the Brewers head towards Spring Training 2025, there are really only four clear starting pitchers that they are confident will be healthy and good enough to start: Peralta, Myers, Cortes, and Aaron Civale.
What is unclear is whether or not Brandon Woodruff, who missed all of 2024 and most of 2023 with a shoulder injury, will be healthy by the time the season starts. Milwaukee expects him to play a role in their starting rotation this upcoming season, but when he will be ready is not certain.
Aaron Ashby and DL Hall are coming off of injury-plagued seasons, but both performed better out of the bullpen than they did as starters. Grant Wolfram, who was signed in free agency, has no Major League experience, but signed a Big League deal with the Brewers earlier this offseason.
Robert Gasser, who dazzled in his first five Major League starts last year, will not be healthy enough to join the team again until August.
Last year, Milwaukee used 17 different starting pitchers. Clearly, they would like to add some more depth.
The Milwaukee Brewers Could Sign Trevor Williams
One option on the free agent market is right-handed starter Trevor Williams. Patrick McAvoy of Sports Illustrated believes that the Brewers could get him for cheap, writing, “The Brewers can compete for the top spot in the National League Central again and having even more depth for the rotation only could help. One player who would make a lot of sense is veteran hurler Trevor Williams.”
Williams is projected to get a one-year contract worth $10 million.
Last season, he made 13 starts in an injury-shortened season for the Washington Nationals. He went 6-1 with a 2.03 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Clearly, these numbers suggest that he could be an excellent addition to the Brewers starting rotation.
It is worth noting, however, that Williams does have a tendency to give up a lot of home runs. In 2023, he was 6-10 in 30 starts with a 5.55 ERA and 1.60 WHIP. He also gave up an National League-leading 34 home runs.
During the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Williams made 11 starts and went 2-8 with a 6.18 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. He also gave up a Major League-leading 15 home runs.
While his 2024 performance suggests that he has a high ceiling, perhaps pitching at hitter-friendly American Family Field would not be the best fit for him.
Then again, Milwaukee’s pitching lab has done a great job resurrecting the careers of struggling pitchers. Perhaps they can help him figure out how to keep the ball out of the stands.
