On Monday, the Milwaukee Brewers started a three-game series with their divisional rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals. During the first game of this series, the Brewers took a hard-hitting 9-3 loss. Even though Milwaukee lost, it was a night to remember for shortstop Willy Adames as he had a real emotional moment. In this second game, Milwaukee took a rough 7-4 loss. This Brewers team will look to bounce back in the series finale before they face the horrendous Colorado Rockies.
Milwaukee is 81-58 after this loss. They are 10 games above the Chicago Cubs and 11 games above the Cardinals in the NL Central division. St. Louis takes a step over .500 with the win, now at 70-69. The Brewers will have to anticipate some big series that could have massive playoff implications this final month of regular season action.
Milwaukee Brewers Collapse in Extra-Inning 7-4 Loss to the Cardinals
During the top of the first inning, Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado hit a sacrifice fly to bring the first run of the game on the scoreboard. Two batters later, Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt ripped an RBI double that bounced near the right field wall. At the bottom of the third, Brewers third baseman Joey Ortiz cracked his 10th home run of the season to left field. Two batters later, Milwaukee’s left fielder Jackson Chourio annihilated his 19th home run on the year to center field to tie the game up at two runs apiece.
Game Gets Tied Up Once Again
Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt recorded his second RBI of the day when he drove a solo homer to left field during the top of the fourth. During the bottom of the fifth, this game would be tied up once again when Chourio whacked an RBI double to left field. Neither team would be able to score during the rest of this game, which meant this would be another extra-inning duel for Milwaukee. At the top of the 11th, Goldschmidt put his team out in front again when he hit a go-ahead single to center field. During the bottom half of the 11th, Brewers shortstop Willy Adames tied the game at four with an RBI double to center field.
Cardinals Take the Lead and Win
It would be Cardinals center fielder Michael Siani to give St. Louis the lead once again. Siani cranked a two-run single to left field. St. Louis’ designated hitter Alec Burleson capped the game off with a sacrifice fly to give the Cardinals a 7-4 lead and the eventual win. Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Aaron Civale pitched five innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven. Hopefully, he can turn things around next outing.
