It is already one full year since Sean Jones suited up for the Marquette Golden Eagles but he is making progress.
He recently received clearance to play 5-on-5 in practice but he remained limited to the point that he will wear redshirt for the rest of the season.
Head coach Shaka Smart said he is picking up already on offense but his bigger problem is his defense. This is regarded as among the reasons why he was deemed not ready yet for the first team.
“He’s been really good in practice on offense,” Smart told reporters. “He’s not quite been himself yet on defense in terms of trusting that knee and that leg to move laterally.”
“I can tell he doesn’t quite feel like himself yet on defense because sometimes he’ll switch with another guy to maybe get off the quickest guy.”
Sean Jones still has two years of eligibility left.
Smart explains Sean Jones redshirting
Jones, who has played 49 games for Marquette so far, is a reliable point guard for Smart.
However, redshirting him for the rest of the current season is a decision driven for his own welfare.
Smart is looking forward to get him back in tip top shape after completing his recovery which is supposed to go for 18 months.
“Excited about him continuing to get that thing better and get more comfortable and get more confident,” Smart said. “And hopefully be out there in a Marquette uniform in about 10 months.”
For now, the Golden Eagles are looking good as they are, topping the Big East with a 14-2 record with guards Chase Ross, Stevie Mitchell, and Kam Jones putting up great numbers.
