On Saturday, Marquette basketball beat Western Carolina 94-62 at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Marquette shot 51% as a team, collected 15 steals, scored 29 fast break points, and led by as much as 39 points in a win against the Southern Conference squad. More notably, guard Kam Jones collected a double-double for the second time this season, his first since posting a triple-double in a win against the Purdue Boilermakers circa mid-November.
Entering Saturday’s tilt against Western Carolina, Jones sat just outside the top 20 regarding points per game, averaging 19.6 points on 65% shooting. Following the win, one former NBC sportswriter dropped one shocking Kam Jones stat, putting him in the same company as two-time National Player of the Year Zach Edey, formerly of the Purdue Boilermakers and now of the Memphis Grizzlies, through eight games.
Marquette Basketball Guard Kam Jones Having Zach Edey-Like Season
According to Mark Strotman of @WestMonro:
Zach Edey last season through 8 games: 59 of 97 (60.8%) from the field
Kam Jones this season through 8 games: 64 of 99 (64.6%) from the field
This is not normal. #mubb
On Saturday, Kam Jones went 9-of-14 from the field and 2-of-4 from deep, scoring 20 points in a blowout win against Western Carolina. The victory places top-ranked Marquette at 8-0 but also keeps Jones’ high-efficiency numbers afloat. Through eight games, Jones is shooting 65% from the field despite shooting a bevy of threes and playing a combo guard role. At 64-of-99 shooting to start the season, Jones is pacing the same efficiency numbers of former Purdue Boilermakers superstar Zach Edey last season. A seven-foot-four big, Edey shot a league-best 63% from the field last season on a DI-high 25.2 points per game.
Jones has shot under 50% just once this season, going 4-of-9 in a shockingly close game against the Central Michigan Chippewas. Earlier this season, he collected the program’s first triple-double since Dwyane Wade in the early 2000s. He has shot over 60% in his team’s last three games, all winnings.
Marquette Eying Big Finish to Non-Con Schedule
Following Saturday’s blowout win against Western Carolina, Marquette basketball will prepare for a road trip to Ames, Iowa, to face the Iowa State Cyclones early next week. The fifth-ranked team in last week’s AP Poll, Iowa State, is 5-1 and led by the backcourt duo of Curtis Jones and Keshon Gilbert.
Following their contest against ISU, Marquette will play their annual game against the Wisconsin Badgers before a road tilt against A10 favorite Dayton. Marquette will open up Big East competition with the Butler Bulldogs in mid-December.
