Kam Jones scored 18 points in Marquette Golden Eagles’ gutsy win over the DePaul Blue Demons in Chicago.
While the point production is just well within his season average, behind it is an intense offensive struggle.
The senior guard, who just last month was receiving praises for his evolved game, is yet to shoot more than 50 percent from the field this 2025. The Tuesday game was one of his uglies in terms of 3-point shooting.
Jones, who NBA analysts thought were one of the best perimeter players in college basketball, shot just 1 out of 10 from the three point line. He finished the game converting just 8 shots from his 21 attempts.
Before DePaul, he was just 28.6 percent from the field for 11 points against Georgetown Hoyas and 36.4 percent for 22 points against the Creighton Bluejays.
Good thing for him against DePaul, David Joplin stepped up big time, scoring 30 points in a win the forward described as a something made for him because of his comfortability level with WinTrust Arena.
Shaka Smart explains Kam Jones’ shooting slump
Jones play hard. His game keeps on evolving.
However, there is one thing he should control.
For head coach Shaka Smart, the over aggressiveness can get to him and ruin his concentration.
“Kam is such a conscientious, awesome guy. I wouldn’t trade him for anyone in the world. But sometimes he holds on so tight, he wants it so much, that it can affect his shooting. But, man, he let that one fly at the end, the one he made,” Smart said after the game.
While the shots were not falling, Jones made a good account of himself when it comes to the execution of the ball.
Jones was responsible for the two dimes to David Joplin who converted two 3-point shots in the opening minutes of the overtime period.
He will have another shot at overcoming his slump on January 18 when they meet Xavier Musketeers for the second time.
