The likelihood of the Milwaukee Brewers trading closer Devin Williams this off-season seems inevitable, but the key question remains: who and when? With the MLB Winter Meetings underway, it’s reasonable to think a deal could materialize soon.
Since the off-season has begun, the Philadelphia Phillies have seemed like a logical fit for Devin Williams to land. However, they just signed former 2x All-Star closer Jordan Romano to a one year, $7.75 million contract. Despite this signing, the Phillies may still need additional bullpen help.
Devin Williams should be traded by the Milwaukee Brewers this off-season
With one year of team control remaining, the Brewers will likely trade Devin Williams before he enters free agency. The elite closer has out-priced himself out of Milwaukee and is one of those rare relievers who should receive a qualifying offer next winter. One caveat to this is that if a team acquires him during the 2025 season, he would be ineligible to receive a qualifying offer. This should incite teams to get a deal done during the off-season, otherwise the Brew Crew may hold on to him and claim the compensatory draft pick for themselves.
The Philadelphia Phillies have been a logical landing spot for Devin Williams, but they just signed Jordan Romano
With the departures of Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez, the Phillies have seemed like a logical landing spot for Devin Williams. News out of MLB Winter Meetings is that pending a physical, Jordan Romano has agreed to a contract with Philadelphia. Romano was one of the games best closers from 2021-2023, but is looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2024 season that consisted of a 6.59 ERA
Despite signing Jordan Romano, the Philadelphia Phillies may still be in the mix for Devin Williams
As mentioned, the Phillies lost a pair of bullpen pitchers. Adding Jordan Romano is a step in the right direction, but should they go out and trade for Devin Williams then their work may be done. If Philadelphia does this, they would be investing close to $16 million in bullpen arms for one season while also having to part ways with others in order to acquire Williams.
