The Green Bay Packers enter the offseason with plenty to be hopeful about. The Packers made their second consecutive postseason appearance in the post-Aaron Rodgers era, and they did so with the league’s youngest roster.
However, the Packers might need to find another young cornerback in the 2025 draft. Since the 2021 season, Jaire Alexander has played in just 34 games. He only had one season (2022) in which he was fully healthy. The 27-year-old appeared and started in seven games in 2024, missing substantial time for a knee injury.
Alexander is one of the league’s best corners when healthy, but his absences are concerning given his sizable contract. Green Bay is playing the former Louisville Cardinals standout $21 million per year.
Green Bay Packers urged to cut or trade a star player
Matt Schneidman of The Athletic argued the Packers should cut or trade Alexander to clear cap space.
“Other maneuvers will be made to free up cap space this offseason, but this is the most obvious one,” Schneidman wrote. “Gutekunst said the Packers are already in their best offseason cap situation in two or three years, so this would add substantially to that arsenal. Cutting or trading cornerback Jaire Alexander — it might be difficult to find a trade partner since teams know the Packers are probably moving on from him — would free up about $6.8 million in cap space if done before June 1, according to Over the Cap.
“Gutekunst said there isn’t a disconnect between the team and Alexander, but he has the team’s third-highest cap number for 2025 behind Love and defensive end Rashan Gary and has played in only 15 of the last 37 games because of four injuries.”
Jaire Alexander just hasn’t been on the field enough
The Packers selected Alexander with the No. 18 pick in the 2018 draft. The native of Philadelphia proved he was worth the first-round pick, making the PFWA All-Rookie Team in his first season and earning All-Pro honors and Pro Bowl appearances for the 2020 and 2022 seasons.
Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to stay on the field enough for Green Bay.
