The Green Bay Packers will certainly be making some tough decisions this off-season. It is widely speculated that their decision at defensive coordinator will be atop the list. After this season it would be surprising to see the Packers keep Joe Barry in that role.
As it turns out, a former Super Bowl Champion coach may be in line to take over the defense in Green Bay.
The Green Bay Packers Pegged To Hire Wade Phillips As Their New Defensive Coordinator In 2024
One report has indicated that the 76-year-old could be next in line for the Packers:
It may be too late to take advantage of a championship window with an Aaron Rodgers-led offense, but it’s not too late to right the wrong that was made in early 2021. Wade Phillips has been a coach since 1970 and involved with the NFL since 1976.
Not only does Phillips have the background, but the resume speaks for itself. Although he hasn’t been a coach in the NFL since 2019, many forget just how good his defenses were. In 2015, Phillips’ Denver Broncos defense bested the high-powered Carolina Panthers offense 24-10 in Super Bowl 50. I
n Super Bowl LII, Phillips’ Los Angeles Rams defense held Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to just three points in the first three quarters. While the Rams did lose, Phillips’ defense surrendered just 13 points to one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
As if his resume and background didn’t speak for itself enough, Phillips also has a relationship with LaFleur from Los Angeles which played a factor in why LaFleur hired Joe Barry. Phillips also coached in the XFL this past year for a Houston Roughnecks team that made the playoffs. No defensive coordinator would be more suited for this position than Phillips.
What Would Phillips Bring To the Packers?
Phillips’ career in coaching spans more than 40 years. He has served as defensive coordinator for eight NFL teams and coached in two Super Bowls. As a head coach, he won 56% of his games, including three full-time jobs with Buffalo, Denver, and Dallas, and three interim jobs with New Orleans, Atlanta, and Houston.
Between Marv Levy (born 1925) and Sean McVay (born 1986), he worked with Buddy Ryan, Marty Schottenheimer, Dan Reeves, and Gary Kubiak. In addition to coaching 20 top-10 defenses, he has coached 30 Pro Bowlers, five Defensive Players of the Year, and two Defensive Rookies of the Year.
He would bring an incredible amount of experience to the Packers defense. Phillips has also been vocal about wanting to come back to the NFL. He is currently the head coach of the Houston Roughnecks in the XFL.
