With the 2024 NFL season entering its week, the Green Bay Packers already know who most of their 2025 opponents will be. Of course, the players and coaches themselves are only concerned about one opponent, and that would be the Chicago Bears as they play them this coming Sunday. After that, the Packers will be focused solely on whichever team they encounter in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs (likely the Philadelphia Eagles).
That does not mean, though, that fans cannot start looking ahead to what teams they will be able to watch Green Bay play in 2025, especially within the confines of Lambeau Field. Next season’s home opponents are mostly set, though the exact date of each matchup has not yet been determine:
- Bears
- Lions
- Vikings
- Eagles
- Commanders
- Ravens
- Bengals
- Saints (or Panthers)
This home slate will surely provide some difficult matchups for Green Bay. Of these eight teams, five of them are 2024 NFL Playoff teams.
However, it is one particular road opponent that will give the Packers a chance to make a bit of NFL history.
The Green Bay Packers Are Expected to Play the Pittsburgh Steelers in Ireland
It was determined a while ago that the NFC North and AFC North would face each other in 2025. As such, the Packers will play each of the teams in that division, with home games against the Ravens and Bengals and road games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns.
It is the matchup with Pittsburgh that will be the most intriguing. The Packers have not won a game in Pittsburgh since 1970, Bart Starr’s final season as Green Bay’s starting quarterback. They most recently lost there in November of last season.
While this history may paint a bleak picture for 2025, it is noteworthy that reports are claiming that the game itself will not happen on U.S. soil. Instead, the Packers and Steelers are expected to play the NFL’s first ever game in the nation of Ireland.
Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette recently wrote, “The Steelers are expecting to play a regular season game in Ireland in 2025, their first international game in 12 years, according to team sources.”
Noah Strackbein, who covers the Steelers for Sports Illustrated, wrote yesterday, “According to a source, the Steelers are expected to play the Green Bay Packers in Ireland. Pittsburgh would operate as the home team, while Green Bay would view it as an away matchup.”
This will be Pittsburgh’s first international game since 2013 when they lost to the Minnesota Vikings in London.
The Packers are 0-2 in international play, having lost to the New York Giants in London in 2022 and to the Eagles this year in Brazil.
*Note: Packers punter Daniel Whelan is the only current NFL player from Ireland.
