One of the best midseason pickups for the Green Bay Packers over the last several years was cornerback Rasul Douglas. After being plucked off of the Arizona Cardinals practice squad in 2021 when Jaire Alexander went down with a shoulder injury, Douglas had five interceptions, include two that he returned for touchdowns, and became a fast fan favorite in Green Bay.
When he signed a contract extension with the Packers shortly following that season, many assumed that he would be around for a long time. However, Green Bay traded him to the Buffalo Bills last season in exchange for a third round pick.
Douglas has played well for Buffalo during the last two-and-half seasons, but will enter free agency this offseason. And on of the Packers’ biggest rivals may be interested in him.
Former Green Bay Packers Cornerback Rasul Douglas Has Been Linked to the Minnesota Vikings
After being traded to Buffalo last season, Douglas allowed just a 51.3% completion percentage when targeted while intercepting four passes. Opposing quarterbacks had just a 38.6 passer rating when targeting him.
This season, he has not been as effective. Douglas has allowed a completion percentage of 72.9% while opposing quarterbacks have a 122.0 passer rating when targeting him. He also has not intercepted any passes.
Still, Douglas is regarded as one of the better cornerbacks who will be hitting the open market this offseason. He will have plenty of teams interested, and one of them is presumed to be the Minnesota Vikings, who may lose All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Mason Cameron of PFF recently wrote:
“Douglas faced his share of challenges in Buffalo, earning a 58.9 coverage grade in 2024. However, his knack for creating turnovers remains undeniable, as he tallied 14 interceptions over the three seasons prior.
“As the Vikings look to replace Stephon Gilmore, Douglas presents a seasoned option for the outside. His skill set aligns well with Brian Flores’ aggressive, blitz-heavy scheme, making him a strong candidate to bolster Minnesota’s secondary.”
Despite his struggles in 2024, facing Douglas would not be a grand time for Jordan Love and the Packers offense. Hopefully a different team, one outside of the NFC North, will lure him away.
Of course, there is also the chance that he could return to the Packers as they are expected to part ways with Alexander. Then again, if Green Bay had wanted him to be part of their long-term plans, they would have held onto him.
For his part, Gilmore is entering free agency himself, though has not decided if he wants to play in 2025 or retire from the NFL. If he does choose to play and signs elsewhere, it will be his fifth team in five years.
