A new NFL season means a fresh opportunity for Green Bay Packers quarterback Sean Clifford. The 27-year-old signal-caller is on the roster of the Packers as the team’s training camp began last week, and he is on a mission to win the other backup role.
Jordan Love is clearly the top guy in Green Bay’s QB room, while Malik Willis is widely regarded as his chief backup. However, the No. 3 QB job appears to be up in the air, with Clifford and former CFL star Taylor Elgersma battling for the QB3 spot.
Clifford speaks up amid Green Bay Packers QB3 battle
In 2024, Clifford had an intense backup QB battle against Michael Pratt, who is now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Pratt won that competition, as Clifford was released and then resigned by the Packers to their practice squad.
While 2024 is now in Clifford’s rearview mirror, he’s not forgetting how his fate that year turned out, as he uses it as an inspiration to prove himself to Green Bay again.

Backup QB Sean Clifford doesn’t hide his disappointment over how last season went. So far, he’s pleased with his start to camp as he competes with Taylor Elgersma for the No. 3 job. “I think I’m off to a good start,” Clifford said after Sunday’s practice. “I took what happened last year very personally and I’m very proud of where I’m at. A lot to go, but I’m excited.”
Clifford, a product of Penn State Nittany Lions football program, entered the pros in 2023, when the Packers took him in the fifth round (149th overall) of that year’s NFL draft. So far in his NFL career, he’s appeared in only two games (both in the 2023 season), with negative-2 passing yards on three pass attempts.
