A few weeks ago, it was reported that former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy had drawn interest from the Chicago Bears for their vacant head coach position. They asked the Dallas Cowboys, with whom McCarthy was under contract for just another week or so at the time, for permission to interview him.
They were denied.
At the time, many hypothesized that the Cowboys rejecting Chicago’s request indicated that McCarthy would be retained as head coach.
But he wasn’t.
Former Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy Has Had an Interesting Offseason
Despite the feeling that he was going to be retained by Dallas after they denied Chicago permission to interview him, the Cowboys ended up not offering McCarthy a contract, and his deal with them expired a week later.
At that point, McCarthy was flown into Chicago for an in-person interview with the Bears. This was significant because most of their head coaching interviews had been done remotely. The fact that they had flown him in made many believe he was the favorite to land that job.
But, of course, he did not get it.
Instead, the Bears hired former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson without even formerly interviewing him.
While he is still a finalist (and favorite) to land the head coaching job with the New Orleans Saints, McCarthy’s future, at least for 2025, is far from certain. And the coach the Cowboys did hire makes the whole situation that much more frustrating.
The Dallas Cowboys Hired Brian Schottenheimer as Their Head Coach
After deciding that McCarthy and his three winning seasons in five years was not good enough to warrant a new contract, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made the decision to hire Brian Schottenheimer as the 10th head coach in that franchise’s history.
Prior to being named head coach, Schottenheimer was McCarthy’s offensive coordinator.
As Packers fans know, McCarthy is an offensive-minded coach and calls his own plays, meaning that Schottenheimer did not call the plays in Dallas over the last five years. In fact, in over two decades as an assistant coach, he has not had play-calling duties.
While it may be true that it was time for McCarthy and the Packers to part ways, the fact remains that their entire process of moving on from him was disrespectful, and their choice of replacement incredibly confusing.
