Despite what some Green Bay Packers fans may believe, the team is set at head coach for the foreseeable future. Matt LaFleur has led the Packers to the postseason in five of his first six seasons, led the team through the Aaron Rodgers transition, and helped develop Jordan Love into a franchise quarterback.
He may not be perfect, but is job is very, very safe.
The same cannot be said, however, for the man he replaced, Mike McCarthy, who is current head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Former Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy Faces an Uncertain Future with the Dallas Cowboys
After taking a year off following his dismissal from the Packers in 2018, McCarthy was hired to be the head coach of the Cowboys in 2020. After they went 6-10 in his first season (a year in which star quarterback Dak Prescott was limited to five games), Dallas won 12 games in each of the next three years. After a 7-10 season in 2024, McCarthy’s regular season record with the Cowboys is 48-35, good for a .583 winning percentage.
And while that kind of regular season success is usually good enough for a coach to earn a contract extension, Jerry Jones made the decision not to give McCarthy one following Dallas’ loss to the Packers in the Wild Card Round last year.
So McCarthy entered the 2024 NFL season as a lame duck head coach. Unfortunately for him, Jones also did not provide him with an adequate roster with which to be competitive.
Now that Dallas’ season is over, his future there remains uncertain.
The Chicago Bears Have Requested Permission to Interview former Green Bay Packers Coach Mike McCarthy
While the Cowboys have not made up their mind one way or another in regard to whether or not McCarthy will be back, the Packers’ oldest rival, the Chicago Bears, have requested permission to interview him:
Chicago Bears have sought permission to interview Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy and are awaiting a response from Dallas, sources tell me and @toddarcher.

As fans may recall, McCarthy’s Packers knocked the Bears out of the NFC Championship Game on their way to victory in Super Bowl XLV.
Other NFL teams have to wait until January 14 to interview McCarthy unless they are given permission to speak to him by the Dallas.
According to Jon Machota, who covers the Cowboys for The Athletic, Jerry Jones did not sound like he would block his head coach from talking to other teams: “Then I would say, ‘Go talk.’ I really would. Go talk. I just let (Ezekiel Elliott) do that. That’s not healthy to have somebody around that wants to be someplace else.”
ESPN analyst Jeremy Fowler also reported, “Some around the league believe McCarthy would have interest in Bears job should Dallas move on.”
The former Packers head coach has worked with Brett Favre, Rodgers, and Prescott during his career. Developing a quarterback as talented as Caleb Williams may be intriguing for him.
