Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Holmgren also has deep ties to the Seattle Seahawks organization. Of course, that is the team he left Green Bay for after winning a Super Bowl with Brett Favre and company. Due to this connection, former Seahawks quarterback (and current Denver Broncos starter) Russell Wilson frequently texted Holmgren to pick his brain.
Naturally, the subject of Favre came up often. In a recent story published by Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette, Holmgren revealed what he told Wilson concerning Favre.
Mike Holmgren Tried to Keep It Vague When Talking about Brett Favre, Others to Russell Wilson
After he retired from coaching, Holmgren was a radio analyst in Seattle. This meant that he was around the Seahawks’ facility regularly. A young Russell Wilson contacted him frequently wanting to talk shop:
“I remember one of my earliest conversations with him. He wanted to sit down and talk to me when I was doing a show (at the Seahawks facility). He seemed to be very attentive. I told him, ‘You’re going to be pulled in a million different directions in the league and you’ve got to learn to say no. You have to learn to focus on your football.’’
“He’s very curious. He was very inquisitive. I told him, ‘If I lived through Brett, I can live through anything.”’
The stories of Favre’ antics and Holmgren’s reactions to them are the stuff of legend in Green Bay. That being said, they were able to make it work well enough to go to back-to-back Super Bowls, winning one of them.
As for remaining vague, Holmgren had a reason for that:
“I’m the old coach. I’ve got to be careful. You’ve got other guys coaching. Let’s keep it like that.”
One has to admire that level of respect Holmgren has for those now running the organization. They are in his former position for a reason.
